Are you a Portishead dad with young children? Have you ever tried taking them to a traditional toddler group? Pretty stressful as you were probably the only man in the room! We really needed someone to set up something locally for dads and their children!

Well, great news: Portishead already has two groups specifically aimed at dads and their children (aged 0-7 yrs): “Lads, Lasses and Dads” (LLaDs). Both groups meet on a Saturday morning between 10.30 and 12.00. The group at St. Barnabas Children’s Centre, West Hill, meets on the second Saturday of the month and the one at Trinity School Community Hall on the fourth Saturday of the month. The groups don’t meet in August but we often plan a picnic or other local activity for all the family.

Both groups provide toys, games, interesting activities and snacks for the children plus good coffee and bacon butties for the dads. The sessions are very relaxed. It is a great place to get to know other dads and spend quality time with your children. The groups are run by volunteers who have all been DBS checked. There is no specific price but a donation of £2 per adult and £1 per child is suggested to help cover operating costs.

Mum gets a couple of hours to herself. We realise that new mums may be a little reluctant to allow dad out alone with a brand new baby. Mums are very welcome to come along with dad for the first session or two to make sure that all is well.

Every few weeks, some of the dads also meet up for a beer (and often a curry) on a Saturday evening. A number also go away for a weekend of camping with their children in the Forest of Dean in the early Summer.
